ONE-ON-ONE NUTRITION COUNSELING

What is a Health Coach?

Health Coaches focus on a holistic approach to health, and they provide patients with a safe, supportive space to explore their health issues and goals. A health coach guides patients towards sustainable diet and lifestyle changes so that patients can discover the foods & lifestyle practices that specifically work for them.  They help patients sort through the sea of health information out there, while personalizing treatment plans to each patient’s individual needs.  Often the focus is on the dietary aspect of a patient’s well-being in order to help the patient achieve symptom and pain relief through food & diet.  However, health coaches also address the fear & emotional stress caused by a patient’s physical pain, their overall health journey and relationship with food.

How I work with patients

Prior to the initial consultation, I ask patients to fill out a health history form giving me a snap shot of what they ate as a child and what they eat now.  This gives me an understanding of where they are at nutritionally, what foods may bring emotional comfort, and current eating habits.  During the initial consultation, the patient will share their health history and goals. Common goals are how to eat healthier, how to relieve digestive issues, and how to reduce pelvic pain & symptoms.

I will often ask patients to keep a food diary initially, as this creates accountability and allows the patient to become aware of what they eat, how food makes them feel, and how what they eat can affect their pelvic pain & symptoms. We discuss how they can bring in more nourishment, as well as inflammatory foods to avoid, so that patients understand what they CAN eat to feel better.   Through active listening, I create a safe space for the patient to share their thoughts, fears & behaviors related to food, and I offer nonjudgmental guidance & emotional support to assist them with their diet & lifestyle changes.  For example, teaching a patient how to meal plan and providing them with healthy recipes to prepare at home, allows them to avoid inflammatory ingredients abundant in restaurant food, thus reducing inflammation in their bodies, which results in reduced pain & symptoms.

Common outcomes after working with me for 3-6 months

I meet with patients every week or every other week, depending on the level of support they are needing.  Typically it takes 3-6 months for patients to achieve tangible goals and outcomes with their health, lifestyle and overall well-being, however many patients note improvements in how they feel after ONE session!  I offer encouragement and consider myself a patient’s biggest cheerleader!  After implementing suggested diet & lifestyle changes such as removing inflammatory foods, adding in nutrient-dense foods, managing stress, becoming more active, and bringing in enjoyable activities (along with their provider’s pain management plan), patients report more energy, better sleep, less stress, confidence around what to eat, reduced or eliminated pain & symptoms, more trust in their body’s ability to heal, and a more positive outlook on life.

With her integrative, whole-person approach, Monique guides clients through overall lifestyle changes with a focus on nutrition & health. She believes that food can be powerful medicine and assists clients in discovering root causes for imbalance, while helping them see the connection between food, emotions, pelvic health, digestion, environment and overall well-being.

Sessions will be about you and your relationship to food, with recommendations on how to transition to healthier ways of eating & being. You will receive a thorough nutrition assessment at your initial 90-minute session where we will review your health history, food and supplement intake, digestive health, food allergies or intolerances, and health goals. We will then work together to determine a follow-up schedule to routinely assess your progress and make adjustments as needed. Working with an integrative health coach to improve your nutritional and overall health is an important component when addressing an array of chronic conditions and health goals.
